Some Data

Crime rates:

Cape Town has a high crime rate, with violent crimes such as assault and murder being more common than in other major cities in South Africa.

Theft:

Petty theft is also a problem, so it is important to be aware of your surroundings and to take precautions against theft.

Areas to avoid:

There are a few areas in Cape Town that are known for high crime rates, such as the townships of Langa and Nyanga. It is best to avoid these areas, especially at night.

Safety Tips:

Here are some safety tips to keep in mind when visiting Cape Town:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings close at all times, never leave anything unattended or unlocked.
  • Always keep your cellphone charged and having a cellphone power bank will come in handy.
  • Do not walk alone at night or during the day, especially in unfamiliar areas and whether you are in a decent-looking suburb or not. Stick to places where there are a lot of other people such as malls.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash or valuables. Be mindful of snatch and run situations when playing on your phone and do as those do around you.
  • Be mindful of your personal space and pat yourself down immediately after any unwanted contact to ensure that your belongings are where they were.
  • When exploring the city, having a street-smart local by your side will always make a major difference in the way in which you experience the city.
  • Most of the time locals who can speak English fluently can be trusted. That is not to say that other locals can not be trusted but you have to trust your instincts.
  • Do not buy something or get in a vehicle to go somewhere just to be nice, stand your ground.
  • Trust your instincts and if a crime has been committed against you, do not hesitate to report it to the police.

Be vigilant of your surroundings:

This is the most important safety tip in any city. Pay attention to who is around you and what is going on. If you see something suspicious, do your best to avoid the situation.

Private Security Services:

The civilian population of South Africa spend heavily on home security and home security systems to safeguard their belongings from cat burglars. Sometimes these private armies ensure the safety of entire suburbs and assist the police in keeping our communities safe. We also have informal security services protecting vehicles in most car parking lots, but this does not mean that belongings should be laying around in any vehicle.

Load Shedding:

Prior to coming to South Africa please download the ESP application in order to keep track of the power cut schedule. Load shedding is when the power is cut in order to reduce the strain on the electricity grid. Life goes on regardless of this reality as most places have alternative means of generating power.
